A coal-cutting machine was being drawn into position at the face in the Redmine seam (inclination 1 in 6). Deceased was stepping past at the lower end when the haulage rope attached to the machine broke and it slipped back about a yard. The cutter bar knocked him down and ran onto his chest crushing him severely that he died almost instantly.
