- Details of Event
- While deceased and his mate were inserting a charge of gunpowder in a crack on a ledge, a quantity of rock fell from behind them and pushed them over the edge, and they fell a depth of 60 feet. They had neglected to use ropes which were at hand and to remove rock which they suspected was dangerous. Hughes died a week later and his mate was seriously injured.
