- Details of Event
- He was hewing with another man in a longwall gateway in a seam 1 foot 10 inches thick. For some reason or other he was coming away from the coal face with a stick in his hand, probably to set more props, when a stone 13 feet long, 4 feet wide and l6 inches thick fell on to him. He died on 1st January, from his injuries. The stone fell from between two slips running parallel with the barrow-way, and another one crossing it. The place was not timbered as it should have been if the Special Timbering Rules (by which the maximum distance was fixed at 4 feet) had been observed.
