Deceased and five other sinkers were engaged in putting iron rings inside the shaft walling to strengthen it, as there dad been a recent heavy crush. They worked on a half moon stage attached to the top of the cage. About 2.30 pm. they descended after having been up to dinner, and were getting out of the cage at the 4 feet landing to get on to the cage top, when deceased did not step far enough, and fell down the pit. The distance he had to step across was too great, being 27 inches.
