- Details of Event
- Deceased and five other persons were ascending the downcast shaft in the west cage. He stood at the south end of the cage, and was seen to be holding on to the handrail when the ascent commenced. When about half-way up the shaft he was seen to fall out of the cage, giving no cry as he did so. The witnesses agreed that the cage was running smoothly, and that there was no pushing or horseplay going on at the time. The cages are constructed to carry ten men, and are provided with the usual handrails. There was no evidence brought forward to account for the occurrence. Deceased is said to have been in good health, and not subject to fits. It appeared to me to be a case of suicide.
