He failed to fire a shot with an electric battery, and thereupon charged a second hole. This second shot also "missed fire." He then tested the cable and found that it was defective. He then decided to use the length of cable beyond the defect. He went to the place where the shots were, leaving the collier with the battery. There was some mistake, for the collier understood that he was to try to fire again. He used the battery and the shot exploded, killing Hughes on the spot.
