- Details of Event
- In consequence of a fire near the upcast-shaft bottom, a new inset 50 yards higher up the shaft was in course of construction with reinforced concrete. Both sides of the shaft were completed, and the straight brick wall to connect the two archings on the empty tub-road side was in progress. Deceased was engaged taking off more side for the wall. He started a shot-hole with a percussive drill, and when it was in a few inches, the side, 14 feet in length, 5 feet in height, and 4 feet 7 inches thick, fell away. There was a slip at the back, and a horizontal parting at the top. The bottom portion was more friable and, as the place was wet, the water had percolated down the slip, and this, probably assisted by the action of the drill, caused the stone to slip away on its seating. The deputy and chargeman had examined the place before the shot-hole was started, and were so confident of its safety that they did not consider it necessary to put any timber supports to it.
