- Details of Event
- The collier, who was deceased’s brother had holed a portion of the face 1ft. 6ins. under for a length of 15ft. and got part of the coal down. He was standing pulling off a large slab to a slip with an iron bar and as soon as the coal came away the roof coal or ‘bags’ 17 inches in thickness followed and breaking off at the face and by the packs and chocks behind fell a length of 21 feet. Both men were caught. The collier, though seriously injured, recovered, but deceased was killed. The slip could be seen before the fall occurred and extra timber should have been set to support the roof, but none was set for a distance of 7ft. 5ins. The Timbering Special Rules required that the distance between roof supports should exceed 6 feet.
