- Details of Event
- Deceased and two other stonemen were shooting down a top canch of blue metal on a waggonway in the South Winnings district of the Yard seam of No.1 pit. The road was about 14 feet wide. The team is 3 feet 9 incites thick and about 1 foot of top stone and a few inches of bottom stone had already been removed to make height. The new canch was about 4 feet thick. The work was a bargain. They fired a shot charged with 14 ounces of Bellite on the left side about 4.40pm. and filled the stones into tubs and then at 7pm. fired a shot also charged with 14 ounces of Bellite on the right side. This shot left on about 18 inches of the hole. After firing both shots an examination was made and after the firing of the second shot some loose stone in-bye of the brow, to which their attention was called by another stoneman passing the place, was pulled down and the roof jowled and considered safe. Soon after when deceased and one of his mates was under the canch working at the loose stones a stone fell from the roof inside the brow killing deceased and slightly injuring his mate. The stone was 9 feet long across the road, 6 feet wide and up to 15 inches thick, and was relieved by a slip and a fossilliferous parting. The place had been examined by the back shift deputy before they started work. There was a supply of timber near. The Local Inspector reported, ‘We are of opinion that he was accidentally killed.’
