After loading a cage with a tram of ore at the 180 fathoms station and signalling it away he, through some cause or other, fell into the shaft. No one witnessed the accident, and there was no evidence to show how it happened. The shaft entrance was well fenced, but immediately after the accident it was seen that one of the fence gates opposite the compartment he had last used was open.
