He was descending the pathway leading from the top to the bottom of the quarry when he slipped and fell backwards. The fall caused injuries which accelerated his death, which occurred on January 13th, 1913. He was one of a "core" whose shift commenced at 4 a.m. On the morning of the accident he arrived at the works an hour late. A lighted hurricane lamp was provided for his use, hut for some reason or other he left it in the cabin and elected to travel in the dark.
