- Details of Event
- Deceased and another packer who was rather seriously injured, were building a hack will parallel to the coal face in longwall workings in No.3 dip in the Yard hand, a seam 5 feet thick and inclined at 8 inches per yard. They had retired from the end of the peck, along the level and 4.5 feet wide left between it and the coal, for a distance of 24 yards where they got their bait, and were returning it work by the same route when a stone, 6 yards long. 4.5 feet wide and 2 feet thick, fell away between the coal and the pack, killing deceased and fastening his mate. The stone was relieved by a slip extending over the coal and in its fall canted out several props. There was a supply of loose timber close at hand, but the place had been considered safe when examined by the deputy before work started, and by the overman and the contractor within half an hour of the accident.
