- Details of Event
- Deceased was engaged in removing a twisted bar of timber, 13 or 14 feet long by 12 inches diameter, from the cage at the bottom of the Middle Pit. The lower end of the bar rested in a tub on the top deck and the upper end was lashed to the bridle chains of the cage. Deceased stood upon the top of the cage, and while holding on to a bridle with his left hand, he released the lashing chain with the other hand. The bar dropped and as it fell it grazed his left arm, causing him to release his hold, and he overbalanced and fell to the scaffold below, a distance of 13 feet. He sustained a fracture of the base of the skull and never regained consciousness. He died 27th December.
