Holdcroft fell out of the cage, at a point 70 yards from the bottom, while ascending the shaft at the end of a shift. There were no gates or fences at the ends of the cage. Deceased had hastened up a dip a distance of 230 yards, inclined it 1 in 3, and this exertion coupled with warmth in the shaft, which is heated by exhaust steam may have caused a seizure of some kind. There was nothing else to account for his falling.
