- Details of Event
- Died July 21st, 1907. Deceased was engaged with his brother and another miner in taking a ‘sline’ or slice off a pillar of ore. The working place, which was about 10 feet high by 10 feet wide, was timbered up to within 18 inches of the face. Three shots were fired in the lower part of the working. On returning after firing, they found that the shots had failed to dislodge the ground on the right side, and after an examination, deceased commenced to bore another hole in it. While so engaged a portion of the ore (about 15 cwts.) suddenly fell and struck him on the back, fracturing his spine. The ground in which deceased was boring was undercut but they had not considered it necessary to put in a temporary prop. An official inspection of the place had been made during the shift prior to the firing of the three shots.
