When working by night with another youth, aged 16, a part of the roof at the foot of a pass fell upon him and killed him. Apparently no one had ever taken the trouble to examine the roof or its unsound condition would have been detected. At the inquest, the shift-boss in charge of this part of the mine was severely censured by the Coroner at the request of the jury.
