- Details of Event
- He, with two others, was driving a place through the pillars in the Hutton Seam for an engine plane. The coal was 3 feet thick and a top caunch, also 3 feet thick, was being taken down. This top caunch had been shot down almost on to the coal except at the left side and a hole was being made in the stone at the right side to take the did of a steel girder, when the piece of caunch left on the left side clime over on to him. Across the face of the caunch was a joint, which was visible prior to the stone falling, but the stone on being jowled was thought to be safe. After the stone bad fallen, a joint at an angle to the face joint and running into it was to be seen. Above the stone there was a free parting. It is emarkable that the stone stayed up at all. It was an error of judgement on the part of tile men not to have taken it down before proceeding with other work.
