Deceased was engaged, along with another workman, in replacing a prop underneath the end of a roof bar in a main shunt. A jack prop had been set under centre of the bar, and the end prop withdrawn. Before another prop could be set a stone measuring 4 feet by 3 feet 9 inches by 12 inches fell from the roof, displacing the bar and jack prop. It fell on Hilton's head and neck and killed him instantly.
