- Details of Event
- Apparently he was on his way to examine some bearings in the crusher house, and attempted to pass between some belting travelling at the rate of 2,000O feet per minute. He was caught by the belt and carried round a pulley on the counter shaft, then about 20 feet along the top of the belt to a pulley driving a crusher, and projected to an opening on a platform, eventually falling 10 feet down a gangway to a lower platform. The engineer had some weeks previously seen him pass between the belting while in motion, and did nothing more than remonstrate with him. He alleged that his instructions to Hicks were to stop the machinery before going to the bearings, and a clutch bad been provided for this purpose. Proceedings were taken against the owners for contravention of Section 10 (1)(c) of the Factory & Workshops Act, 1901, when they pled guilty to a technical offence, and were fined 10s., and 6s. costs.
