He and three others were on a stage or cradle for the purpose of examining the sides of the shaft below the 260-fathom level before resuming sinking in the bottom, 15 to 20 fathoms below. They gave a signal to lower the stage, which was responded to at a quicker rate than they expected. The stage caught on one side, and the man at that point, failing to fend it off or stop it immediately, the stage tipped down on the other side where deceased was working, and he, not having a good grip of the bridle-chain, slipped past the side and fell to the bottom of the shaft.
