While breaking into a pillar of coal in the Yard seam off the wagon way a large stone fell from the caunch caught his head breaking his neck. He was kirving in the top coal at time. There were three props under the stone and two stays set against its side but all were displaced. Deputy had examined the place one hour before. The Local Inspectors reported 'In our judgement we found it a pure accident'.
