- Details of Event
- This accident occurred at a junction of putting roads in the Main Coal seam which was being worked in the whole below the goaf of the Hutton seam which is 11 feet thick and lies 15 feet from the Main Coal the roof is consequently somewhat broken and wet and requires careful timbering. The road had become too low a few yards from the turn and hewers inbye of the point had been called out to assist the deputy and deceased in making height. Operations had hardly begun and deceased was sitting at the turn when a stone 5.5 feet by 3.5 feet and 13 inch thick relieved by slips fell upon him from the roof partially displacing two planks in its fall. No running balk was used so as to better secure the roof at the turn. The Local Inspectors reported ‘we consider that it was accident.’
