He appears to have been putting hangers for haulage rope sheaves in some of the arms of double timber on one of the engine planes. Apparently the hammering knocked out or disturbed the arm he was engaged at, with the result that the "collar" and a large stone resting upon it fell and killed him. He was alone at the time, so that the matter is one of surmise, but no other explanation suggests itself.
