- Details of Event
- Deceased and five other men ascended the shaft about 12.50am. and instead of going by a safe road across this heapstead and over a gangway, elected to cross several lines of rails saving a few minutes thereby. They crawled under some stationary waggons and then crossed a line of rails along which 30 trucks were being pushed by a locomotive. All had a narrow escape but deceased was knocked down and the whole train passed over him and his right arm and leg were severely crushed and he died the same day. A notice board prohibiting travelling across this line but appeared to be disregarded. The engineman whistled before he started. The Jury while returning a verdict of accidental death recommended that a light be fixed at the end of waggons when shunting. The Local Inspectors in their report similarly recited the bare facts.
