29 March 1930: Explosion In Newbattle Pit - By a slight explosion of gas which occurred in the Lady Victoria Pit of the Lothian Coal Company, Newbattle, on Saturday, two miners, James Hay, 57, Lingerwood Road, Newtongrange and James Melrose, Masterton, Easthouses, sustained burns. After being medically treated, they were conveyed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. [Scotsman 31 March 1930]
