- Details of Event
- Some pillars in the Deep coal were being extracted by long wall, the old roads being used as stall roads. A bar was being erected at the way-end in one of these stalls by deceased and two others. Deceased and one of the men stood each in an empty tub holding up the bar while a tree was put under it. The tree was too long and the bar was being lowered when a piece of rock, about 3 feet 9 inches square and 13 inches thick at centre, tapering to nothing at the edges, fell from the roof immediately above them. The other men jumped and got clear, but deceased fell, and, the rock striking the tub, glanced off and fell upon his back, injuring him so severely that he died next day. In dressing up the roof for one end of the bar, deceased had apparently liberated one side of the rock which fell from a slippery facing. The roof had been tried before the bar was put up and was thought to be safe.
