- His duty was to pull the empty tubs out of the cage at the shaft bottom. As his shift was nearly finished anti the pit was waiting of coals, he set off outbye expecting to meet his mate. When he found he had not arrived the deceased returned towards the shaft along the full way kip, at the same time shouting to the lad whose duty it was to knock off the fore end chain, that he would disconnect it for him. When the set reached him at a slow speed he got on to the chain which unfortunately caught come planking, and he was thrown off and crushed by the tubs against a wall. He died on July 13th. It was not part of his proper work, and he had no right to be riding on the chain.
