He was working at the foot of the quarry when a piece of basalt, 4.5 feet by 1.5 feet by 6 inches thick slipped off a vertical joint, 16 feet up, and struck him on the head and neck causing injuries from which he died on August 8th. The stone was probably loosened by a heavy rainstorm which occurred ten minutes previously.
