- Details of Event
- Deceased and some others were lifting a loaded tub which had been upset near to the working face. He complained at the time that he had strained himself but did not report any accident. He died five days afterwards from ‘peritonitis received from gangrene of the appendix.’ In answer to a question from the coroner as to whether he attributed the death to any injury sustained while lifting the tub, the doctor who attended the case said ‘in view of the evidence and history of the case it is difficult to answer, but I cannot help associating the two.’ The jury recorded their unanimous opinion that the death was accelerated by lifting the tub.
