- Details of Event
- Deceased was descending to charge a shot-hole on a ledge 14 feet below the brow of the quarry face, which was 40 feet in height. He carried on his back three tins containing in all 48lbs. of powder. The rope broke and he fell to the bottom, and was killed instantly. Hemp ropes 1.5 inches in diameter were supplied to enable men to reach the ledges on the face, and similar ropes 1 inch in diameter were provided to raise and lower tools. Deceased unfortunately used one of the lighter ropes, which, on subsequent examination by Mr Hepplewhite, was found to be practically rotten. Deceased and his mate had used it for a similar purpose on the same day, but on that occasion were not loaded with powder. It is clear that the accident could have been avoided by the exercise of ordinary care or caution.
