He was acting as shunter, and whilst four wagons were being pushed in front of a locomotive be put his coupling pole over the buffer of the front wagon and under the coupling hook, intending to ride on the pole. He fell whilst he was climbing up and was run over and fatally injured. He had no need to accompany the wagons but as he was a particularly energetic smart boy, it is probable that he had seen regular shunters ride on the pole and was imitating the dangerous practice.
