- He was oiling a vertical pulley in the shaft by standing on the cage top, when the cage was moved, and he fell head first on to the sump boards and fractured his skull. Died on April 3rd. The accident was caused by an assistant hanger-on signalling without authority to the winding engineman. He did not know that Hammond was on the cage.
