Details of Event
Roof fall. A fatal accident at a district colliery, caused by a fall of stone from the roof, was inquired into by Sheriff J. Dean Leslie and a jury at Stirling Sheriff Court on Tuesday. The case was that of Thomas Hamilton, brusher, 10 Bow Street, Stirling, who met with fatal injuries in an accident at No.2 Pit, Millhall Colliery. Robert McPake (34), miner, residing at 17 St John Street, Stirling, who was with Hamilton when he met his death said that on Wednesday 29 October 1930, the deceased Hamilton and he were told to go to the Hartley seam of No.2 Pit, Millhall Colliery, for the purpose of brushing Nos 9 and 10 roads there. They sat down to take off their jackets and get ready for work. After they had been there a minute or two and without any warning, a piece of rock weighing between 30 cwts and 2 tons came away from the roof and fell on Hamilton, pinning him by the lower part of his body to the pavement. With the help of some other men witness got Hamilton out and he was removed to the surface. While they were sitting, there was no indication whatsoever that this stone was likely to fall. He was removed to Stirling Royal Infirmary, stated that Hamilton lay in the Infirmary suffering' from a fractured spine and paralysis for nine months. He died on 1 August 1931.
