- Deceased and another hewer were working double in a bord 6 yards wide in the Five Quarter seam when a stone 11 feet long (across the place), 3 feet 9 inches wide and 18 inches thick at extremes fell from the roof at the face upon deceased who was sitting kirving in the centre of the place the other man was in the right nook and escaped uninjured. The stone projected slightly over the coal and at its outbye edge was supported by two props which were canted out when it fell. Its upper surface was polished and glassy. The place had crossed a small hitch of 1.5 feet throw about 6 yards from the face. There was an ample supply of timber close at hand and the deputy had visited the place on the day of the accident twice before it occurred, The Local Inspectors reported ‘we are of opinion that it is a pure accident.'
