- A small dynamo, endless rope hauling engine-room, each being properly protected and fenced. A youth was in charge of the hauling engine, and, as required, started and stopped the air compressor, which was only run occasionally. Deceased went into the room to examine and clean the dynamo, and afterwards stood talking to the youth, when the compressor was started. The youth returned to his hauling engine, and a minute later heard shouts and saw deceased on the compressor connecting rod, under which he was badly crushed before the engine could be stopped. Deceased had evidently in climbed over the fence around the compressor and in answer to his father the certificated manager of the colliery, said he ‘was gaming and slipped’; asked who with, he said ‘No one.’ He was taken to the hospital, where his leg was amputated, and he died at 6.30pm the same day.
