- Details of Event
- Died July 18th. Deceased, who it was stated had received an injury to his head when 18 years of age, was injured by a fall of coal in his working place in the Maudlin seam on January and his hand was lacerated and head cut. He was 17 days off work and then worked until June when he became insane. He was taken to the workhouse and then to Sedgefeld Lunatic Asylum, where he died. An inquest was held after a post-mortem examination, and the Jury found 'that death was caused by pneumonia as stated by the doctor, but deceased’s condition when brought here was to injuries he had received at Washington colliery on the 29th January last.’ The Jury added as a rider ‘We wish to add that patients brought to this asylum in a dying condition should accompanied by a more detailed history of their antecedents.’ Compensation was paid to the widow by the colliery company.
