While working as a repairer on the main haulage slant, he was run over and killed by runway trams which had been detached from the rope at the surface landing. In consequence of the shortness of room from slant brow to the engine house, a flying shunt is taken to carry the end tram over the brow, but the failure to do so on this occasion caused the tram to run down the slant. Gradient 1 in 8. No barhook used.
