He was asleep on a seat in front of a vertical rod, which had arms for engaging the tappets for working the valves of a large Cornish pumping engine, and which moved up and down through a hole in the floor, making about two sown strokes a minute. He apparently fell forward with his arm over the hole, into which it was pressed by the descending arm on the rod. He died about five weeks later, after having had the arm amputated.
