- Details of Event
- An old road in the Top Fireclay seam which had fallen a height of 10ft. through another bed of "waste "clay to a coal roof, was being reopened. On one side a length of 15ft. of this waste clay was overhanging, but a sprag was set up to it near the centre, and both the deputy and pikeman considered it safe and very hard. The pikeman was instructed to start at one end of this piece and dress it off, standing upon the fallen clay to do so, he had just commenced this work, and deceased was filling a tub near the other end when the overhanging piece suddenly reeled out the sprag and fell, a portion of the clay injuring deceased so severely that he died next day. The side was somewhat wet, and the sprag had been set open a very soft floor.
