- Details of Event
- At Dykehead Colliery, owned by Messrs. The Summerlee Iron Co., Ltd., on 24th April, a miner and two youths were killed in a stooping place in the Ell Coal Seam. The lift of coal had nearly all been taken out when the roof collapsed. The seam was 7 feet thick and the roof was supported on props and straps; of the former, 100 are said to have been set in the lift at distances of about 18 inches apart. The stooping of this seam has been carried out for many years on the same system, but I am strongly of opinion that chocks or wooden pillars should in all such workings be freely used in addition to props.
