- Details of Event
- Deceased was working alone in a bord in the Hutton seam 5 yards wide. When he started a pair of gears was within 3 feet of the face. When he had worked off 2 feet of coal without setting any more timber a ramble stone 3 or 4 inches thick and 9 feet by 5 feet broke off at the plank and relieved by a jack at the face which passed through the seam into the roof and slips at the sides fell upon him breaking his neck and causing according to medical evidence given at the inquest instantaneous death. He was found by a hewer from an adjoining place who in going outbye at the end of the shift called to deceased to join him and getting no answer went to the face. The deputy had been twice in the place and there was an ample supply of loose timber. The Local Inspectors reported ‘in our opinion it has been a pure accident.’
