He was attempting to get a piece of coal which was holed 1 foot 6 inches under, and had been standing on a sprag for about a week, down with a bar, and when it fell some which had not been holed also fell and fatally injured him. When pulling at the bar he had his back to the coal; if he had had his face and been watching the coal, he could have, in all probability, got out of the way before it fell.
