- Details of Event
- Died March 4th. There was some evidence that deceased's left eye bad been struck by a chip of wood in the pit on February 18 also that the eye had been injured some years ago at an adjacent colliery by a shot exploding on him. He did not work after February 18 owing to pain in his eye and after consulting an eye specialist in Newcastle it was decided to remove it. Chloroform was administered on March 4, and he died under it from heart failure. An inquest was held but no notice was given to me and, so far as I could gather evidence was practically limited to what took place at the operation. Compensation was refused but on a trial in the County Court it was awarded.
