Deceased was working at the face of a gate-road in the Thick Coal. As he was in the act of striking, a piece of coal fell on the head of his pick driving it back, and the shaft struck him in the abdomen. He was taken home, and ultimately to the Wolverhampton Hospital. He died later in the day. A post-mortem examination proved that the abdominal wall and the small intestine were ruptured.
