Deceased was a wagoner and cager at a mid-inset at Brooch Seam, 33 yards above the pit bottom. He had gone through the fence gate, and for some purpose had removed a length of rail close to the shaft and while doing this he must have allowed the end to project into the shaft when it was struck by the descending cage and he and the rail were knocked into the shaft, falling to the bottom.
