He fell down the shaft a distance of 354 feet. The shaft had been properly guarded but he had opened the gates in order that the engine bed plate might be placed ready to be lowered down the shaft. Greaves was in charge of this work but there was no known reason why he should have gone to the shaft when he did, and no one knows how the accident happened.
