- Details of Event
- Deceased and other hitchers were cleaning the pit sump, though an arched cross measure drift, served by a small crab engine. One hitcher drove the crab, two others filled the trams and deceased acted as rider. When riding up on the rope in front of a full train, he was squeezed between the top of the tram and either a low collar 4 feet 6 inches above the rail or a low piece of arch where the height was 3 feet 6 inches over one rail, and 4 feet 0.5 inches over the other. Riding on such a road was most improper, and should have been definitely prohibited. He died in four days.
