- Details of Event
- He was employed on the top of the tip heap, and in the evening was left finishing his work and to all appearances as well as usual. The next morning he was found on the tip heap about three yards from where he was left working the previous day in a state of coma and badly burnt on the back. He was removed to the infirmary at Sheffield where he died on the 31st. A post-mortem examination showed that the actual cause of death was an abscess on the right lung and the medical evidence given at the inquest was to the effect that exposure and burns might assist in the development of the abscess and the gases from the tip might also affect him. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, and added that in their opinion death was accelerated by the inhalation of gas from the pit heap.
