Details of Event
While coal was being drawn one of the wire rope guides broke at the top and fell down the shaft. This caused a quantity of dust to fall and made a loud noise in the shaft. The hanger-on, hearing the noise signalled to the engineman to stop, and he did so. On the dust clearing away it was found the deceased had been knocked, either by the falling guide or something in the shaft displaced by it, into the sump and killed.
