- Details of Event
- Died November 3. A locomotive engine with two old railway carriages leaves Percy Main at 6.20am and runs on the Backworth Colliery private railway with lads for this various pits; the first alighting place is the Allotment, for this Algernon pit. By getting off while this train is in motion a little short of this point, where a footpath crosses this line, a short distance is saved, and the Algernon pit lads appear to have been in this habit of doing this as well as riding on this footboard instead of inside the carriages. Deceased and some other lads were so riding and as the train passed this footpath, deceased on this footboard of the first carriage and another lad on this footboard of this second carriage jumped off together, and coming into collision were thrown down and the wheel of the last carriage passed over deceased’s leg. He was taken to Newcastle Infirmary where he died from shock and loss of blood.
